About Satori World Medical

With the rising cost of health care within the United States quite apparent, Satori® World Medical offers people an alternative approach to arranging medical treatment. The company, headquartered in San Diego, California, and led by President and CEO Steven Lash, relies on a global network of hospitals to help reduce the cost of health care for individuals, insurers, employers, and financial sponsors. Through its Quality Assurance Program™, Satori World Medical seeks out the finest facilities around the world to minimize the economic burden on patients. The network offers medical services in Thailand, India, Costa Rica, Mexico, Singapore, Canada, and several other countries. With its approach, the company continues to serve as a leader in the globalization of health care. As medical and technological improvements are made throughout the world, many countries can offer advanced medical care without an inflated price. Satori World Medical takes advantage of this reality through its Health & Shared Wealth Program™. The company boasts a savings of 40-80% on surgical procedures compared to traditional domestic options. The cost includes airfare, hospital and physician fees, hotel accommodations, foreign ground transportation, and a personal accident insurance policy for the patient and a companion. Employers can share these savings with their employee (the patient) through options such as depositing a portion of the savings into a Health Reimbursement Account (HRA) or providing meal per diems while the patient is traveling for surgery. Utilizing an HRA allows for reimbursement to an employee for qualified medical expenses and can be compatible with a qualified Health Savings Account or other model. In addition to cost savings, Satori World Medical strives to provide comprehensive customer service. Through the use of technology and highly trained staff, the firm offers patients an uncomplicated route for scheduling and receiving treatment. After a patient registers via its website or calls, a Nurse Patient Advocate from Satori will make contact to discuss the entire medical treatment process. Next, a Travel Care Coordinator will arrange all logistics of travel and the procedure. Once the date has arrived, patients will be greeted at the airport, escorted to the hotel, and checked in to the hospital the following day. Finally, once the procedure is completed and travel is authorized, patients will return home and consult with their local physician.

Boosting endorphins: Feel good all the time

Ever wonder why people do drugs, drink alcohol or coffee, and eat sweets? It’s because doing these things makes people feel really good.

Why? It’s because of endorphins.

Many food types and substances can induce the brain to release endorphins; however, most of these substances are very dangerous, especially once their effects dissipate. Drugs and alcohol, for example, make you feel good—courageous even—after taking them but leave you in a mess when you’re hung over or coming down from a high. In addition, these substances can damage your mind and body.

However, there are ways to induce your brain to release endorphins naturally. Here are some of them:

Face your fears. The reason why adrenaline junkies do what they do is not because they are fearless, but because facing their fears fills them with euphoria. The greater the fear faced, the stronger the euphoria released.

Exercise. Exercise induces the brain to release endorphins.. This is why you feel euphoric after a run or a workout and is the reason why some people find exercising quite addicting.

Laugh like there’s no tomorrow. There is a reason why many people say that laughter is the best medicine: Laughter makes you feel good, and when you feel good, your body gets better faster.

These are only some of the ways you can get a natural high from endorphins. And with today’s high healthcare costs, it is important for you to take the right steps to ensure that your health is at its best.

A not-so-sweet escape: Sweetened drinks may cause depression

Sweetened drinks are very popular, and both adults and children love them. However, a study found in this online article asserts that people who drink sweetened beverages, such as regular and diet sodas, fruit punch, and sweetened iced tea, have a higher risk of depression.

264,000 participants who were over 50 were included in the study. They were asked about their beverage drinking habits and preferences at the start of the study, and 10 years later, they were asked if any of them were diagnosed with depression during those 10 years. It was found that those who drank more than four or five cans of diet soda were at a 30 percent higher risk of depression than those who did not. Those who drank regular soda had a 22 percent higher risk and those who drank coffee had a 10 percent lower risk.

While there is no conclusive proof that sweetened drinks can cause depression, it is adamant that people moderate their intake of sugary drinks because it can cause diabetes. It is also one of the leading causes of obesity in the US, which in turn is just one of the reasons why healthcare cost in the country is skyrocketing. This leaves a lot of Americans scrambling to find more affordable healthcare alternatives.

Why are Americans sicker than everybody else?

A report on a research conducted by the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine suggests that Americans are sicker, die younger, and have higher rates of developing many disease types than citizens of other wealthy countries. The research’s findings are a little bit disturbing because this should not be the case, as the US is home to many medical breakthroughs.

The report states that even Americans who are insured and have higher income are also sicker compared to those in other high-income nations. It also pointed out that the life span of American men and women are a year less than that of their counterparts in Australia, Canada, Japan, and countries in Western Europe.

One of the reasons for this is the high-fat, high-calorie diet of Americans. The triple patty burgers, double-fried chicken, and extra-large milkshakes have become the staple meals of most Americans, primarily because these fast food items are cheaper than fresh fruits and vegetables. Another reason is that a lot of Americans have sedentary lifestyles, with most opting to drive a car to school or to the office. This high dependence on cars is taking away one of the most fundamental things the human body needs to be healthy—physical activity. In addition, although the US is at the forefront of medical advancements, access to high-quality healthcare is limited due to its increasing cost.

These health problems can be easily be remedied by a lifestyle change—eating right and exercising regularly. Furthermore, there are companies like Healthbase and Satori World Medical that can provide Americans with affordable, high-quality healthcare services abroad to help them save money.

Five reasons why healthcare costs are high

Healthcare costs in the US are higher than in any other country in the world, exceeding $2.6 trillion, which is around 18 percent of the country’s entire GDP. This number continues to rise year after year because of many reasons. Here are five of them:

Medical professionals are being paid for service quantity, not quality. This pay-per-service system reimburses medical professionals for each procedure, test, or visit, and encourages overtreatment and unneeded, repetitive tests.

Americans today live longer. They are also heavier, which makes them more prone to diseases. Due to advances in medical technology, people today have longer lives, which means a prolonged need for medical care. In addition, a lot of Americans today have chronic diseases linked to obesity.

Americans want more medical innovation. Innovations in medical care equate to longer and better quality of life. Americans always want to be at the forefront of innovation. Sadly, many of the new treatments are only slightly better than the ones they have replaced.

Larger medical systems can demand higher prices. In some places in the US, hospitals are fast becoming monopolies, buying up and swallowing their competition, thus jacking up prices.

There is an overuse of care. Some people who get their medical insurance with low deductibles through their employers often overuse it. If this is combined with medical professionals’ penchant to overtreatment, then healthcare costs increase higher.

New efforts by the government and some private insurers now work toward lowering the incidents of overtreatment by working on moving the pay-per-service system to a flat rate-per-condition system. In addition, medical travel providers, like Satori World Medical and Companion Global Healthcare, aim to reduce healthcare costs by promoting affordable high-quality medical care outside the US.

Where medical travel ablazes: A roundup of the industry's hot spots

Surgeries and other medical procedures at top-rated facilities, travel itineraries and accommodations, and up to 80 percent off in medical bills compared to what Americans would pay in the US are all the reasons behind medical travel’s success. This benefits the uninsured and underinsured Americans, and those who are part of a strong and ever-growing clientele. So where is the best place to seek affordable medical care? Forbes lists down top destinations worldwide for medical travel. Some of them are as follows:

1. Australia. This country is great for patients needing cardio, neuro, and orthopedic surgeries, says Planet Hospital.

2. China. The country is a magnet for patients who are looking for advanced forms of stem-cell treatment.

3. Costa Rica. Medretreat sends clients to Costa Rica for all forms of dental procedures.

4. India. From orthopedic to cardiology surgeries, the cost of medical care in India is among the lowest in the industry.

5. Japan and Korea. Both destinations attract patients taking extreme forms of cancer treatments.

6. Mexico. Since it’s closer to home than any country, Mexico is a convenient way for Americans to get medical treatments.

7. Thailand. Satori World Medical helps patients get travel programs to one of the world’s finest medical travel centers in Asia, the Bumrungrad International Hospital.

Domestic medical travel: A rising medical care paradigm

Forbes confirms that almost $20 billion were spent worldwide in 2011 for surgical procedures, such as dental work, cardiac surgery, and plastic surgery, as far as the medical travel industry is concerned. This means that more and more Americans are leaning on to foreign lands for treatments. The main reason that prods Americans to go abroad is the lack of health insurance or the sky-high cost of local healthcare. However, there’s an emerging option called domestic medical travel which helps reduce mounting health care costs.

Domestic medical travel or domestic medical tourism is a rising trend, where employers focus on and get quality yet affordable health care for their employees and plan members from areas or states outside their own. This concept came about as a result of the impact of expensive medical care expenses not just on individuals, but also on their employers who have to endure the pangs of high premiums.

Although many employers have championed international medical care efforts by global healthcare networks and service companies, like Satori World Medical, Healthbase, and Planet Hospital, domestic medical travel has opened a new set of preference for Americans who are looking closer to home as a means of controlling health care costs while improving outcomes.

On another note, this new healthcare concept has paved the way for a stiff competition in the medical travel industry as a whole, which, hopefully, would help in the regulation of health care costs.

Medical travel: Emerging nations get in on the game

Although medical travel has been around for centuries now, with Switzerland as the hub for quality health care, several nations have sprung up to give superior global medical care.

Thailand, for example, has become popular among Americans because in addition to traditional treatments, it provides innovative treatments, such as stem cell therapy, which are unavailable in America. Add to that a luxurious treatment experience that tops it all.

Forbes’ global business staff Miguel Forbes has a thing or two to say about his medical care experience in Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand:

“I generally don’t like hospitals but I had a very positive experience at a fraction of the US cost and at [five times] the speed.

“I stayed at a suite in the St. Regis, a brand new luxury hotel, for less than $200 a night. I received a full medical exam for less than $1,000, including a last-minute MRI. A similar stay at the Four Seasons in Westlake, CA with a state of the art medical and longevity center probably would have been much more expensive and time consuming by a factor of three,”
Forbes attests.

Meanwhile, medical travel companies, such as Medretreat, Satori World Medical, and WorldMed Assist, could affirm that countries like India, Israel, Mexico, Africa, and Singapore have established a name for themselves in the industry. With well-trained physicians and ground-breaking facilities and services at reasonable cost, these countries have contributed to the favorable unfolding of a competent global healthcare.

Montreal, Canada: A medical destination closer to home

Satori World Medical--Montreal, Canada--image credit: http://wrmarsolek.wordpress.com

Year after year, the number of people having their medical procedures performed outside the United States is increasing. But for some people, travelling to a far-off place away from friends and family to have a procedure done is downright scary, even with a companion.

But there is one medical destination that patients averse to traveling far can go to, a place where culture and innovation go hand-in-hand, a place close to home—Montreal.

The city of Montreal in Quebec, Canada is “Canada’s Cultural Capital” and was recently named a United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) City of Design, and remains an important center of commerce, finance, aerospace, technology, film, culture, tourism, and design.

Only 45 miles from the nearest US border, Montreal is closer to home than any First-World country and offers city amenities and conveniences comparable to those in the United States. Temperatures in Montreal range from warm to hot in summer and cold to freezing in winter, similar to temperatures in the northeastern part of the continental United States.

The Centre Metropolitain de Chirurgie, a private 17-bed hospital clinic with modern and state-of-the-art surgical center, is a part of Satori World Medical’s International Centers of Excellence that offers high-quality cosmetic, reconstructive, and bariatric procedures that cost a lot less than those offered in the United States.

Living the good life by living healthy

With medical expenses and obesity rates increasing year after year, more and more Americans are finding out ways on how they can start living healthy.

Satori World Medical--obesity--image credit: http://themindbodyshift.wordpress.com

Satori World Medical agrees that healthy living is composed of two things: eating healthy and exercising. A quick search on the Internet reveals that a healthy meal consists of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. This type of diet can be easily maintained by some people but can be difficult for those who are constantly under stress and pressure. The unsustainability of extreme dieting is the reason why a lot of people gain even more weight the moment they stop dieting. According to the International Journal of Obesity, the diet that people can stick to best is the right one for them. However, all types of diets require a good amount of exercise, which some people forego. They complain that they don’t have time to exercise or that exercising is too hard. Without exercising, healthy living is all but impossible.

Satori World Medical--Combining healthy diet and exercise--image credit:http://www.cbc.ca

Combining healthy diet and exercise is the best way to lose weight and live healthy. Each complements the other, and both should be taken as one because eating healthy without exercising is the quickest way to lose muscle mass, which is really bad for the body. Exercising without eating healthy is an exercise in futility. In addition, exercise also helps manage stress, which is one of the reasons why people tend to overeat.

By eating healthy and exercising regularly, living the good life will become a reality.

Satori World Medical: More than just affordability

With the prices of medical care in the United States rising yearly, Satori World Medical believes that due to more affordable healthcare services outside the United States, medical travel is on the rise. For example, dental implants that cost around $4,000 in the US are only $1,200 dollars in Puerto Rico, and a coronary bypass surgery that costs almost $80,000 in the US is only $10,000 in India.

But even though affordability is the primary reason for medical travel, the following are some factors as to why people choose to have their procedures done abroad:

Medical travelers experience the highest quality healthcare services. Most hospitals in some countries are even better suited to do certain procedures. For example, according to Steven Lash CEO of Satori, Mexican hospitals are more experienced in performing weight-loss surgeries because Mexico has worse obesity problems than the US.

Satori World Medical’s program exceeds published AMA guidelines on medical travel.

Medical travel is never boring. Instead of recuperating in a sterile, boring hospital room and eating bland hospital food, individuals who opt for medical travel can stay at a comfortable hotel room, roam the busy streets of a foreign country, and eat real, tasty food.

During economic crises, wherein people experience massive layoffs and cutbacks in employee benefits, more employers are turning to companies, like Satori World Medical, to help them find ways in reducing their healthcare expenses without compromising quality.

Because of the escalating healthcare prices in the United States, these employers are now searching for innovative ways to reduce their increasing employee healthcare costs. One of these innovative ways is medical travel.

Satori World Medical--healthcare cost--http://www.altergroup.com

The importance of high-quality and affordable health care in the lives of people is driving more of them to seek treatment outside the United States. Medical travel, as this is commonly referred to, is slowly becoming a very viable option for both uninsured and insured patients alike because it is 40-80% cheaper. Should employees go outside the United States for medical procedures, not only will they not be required to pay out-of-pocket expenses but employers will also have a reduced claims cost.

Satori World Medical’s patented Health and Shared Wealth™ has companies like McGregor & Associates share a portion of the savings with its employees via a tax-free Health Reimbursement Account, which is then used to fund an employee’s medical expenses in the future. George McGregor, president and CEO of McGregor and Associates, said that, by adding a global healthcare component, they were able to save significant company dollars and share them to employees. It made a difference.

The world is changing. The economy is unstable and commodities are getting more expensive. According to the Birmingham Business Journal, health care, which used to be affordable, is now out of reach for many low- to middle-class Americans. In 2011, patients covered more out-of-pocket expenses and costs covered by insurance companies grew at nearly the same rate.

The cost of undergoing medical procedures in the United States is far more expensive than having them done in other countries. Clients of Satori World Medical have found out that by having their procedures done through Satori, they could save as much as 30 to 50% on healthcare expenses. Affordable health care is now available to everyone, and patients can have the procedures performed by the top doctors in other countries such as Canada, Singapore, and India. The hospitals and state-of-the-art facilities in these destinations are regularly audited by Dr. Ron Johnson, Satori’s chief medical officer, to ensure that clients always get the best care possible.

Whether you’re having a tete-a-tete under the summer sun or snowboarding on an icy path during winter, your health is always at risk when traveling. Satori World Medical’s Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ron Johnson encourages tourists to take measures as it’s common to come down with something due to fatigue or exposure to germs of all sorts when traveling. To fully enjoy your vacation without being sick, he suggests these tips:

  • Make water a habit. Keeping yourself hydrated is one way of getting around an illness. Without enough water, your increased mobility may lead to headaches, exhaustion, and dizziness. Less water weakens your body, making it more prone to infections.

  • Sleep. It’s the key to get that needed boost. You might find it hard to sleep when traveling, but try to acclimatize right away when transferring from one zone to another. This will help your body adjust and fight exhaustion.

  • Have that shot. Satori World Medical’s chief medical officer emphasizes the importance of knowing what vaccines you need for the destination country you are visiting. With the necessary immunizations, you are assured a healthy and worry-free vacation.
