A lot of people around the world drink alcohol. They are different reasons they do: to binge drink, drink in moderation, or drink for an alcohol-induced slumber. Alcohol’s risks to and benefits on health aside, recent research shows that alcohol also affects sleep quality.
The research, published in the Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research journal, involved scientists reviewing 20 studies, which included 517 health young adults with no history of drinking problems who participated in more than 30 sleep laboratory experiments. In the experiments, the volunteers were asked to drink varying amounts of alcohol ranging from low to high, and the results were recorded.

The review proved that alcohol consumption reduces the time it takes for people to fall asleep by increasing deep sleep in the first half of the night. This may have an impact on health, as deep sleep is associated with the healing of the body and immune system maintenance. According to Irshaad Ebrahim, the lead author of the study and director of the London Sleep Center, the impact on increasing deep sleep is larger the greater alcohol is consumed. Deep sleep on the first half of the night is counteracted by disruptive sleep on the second half, leading to restlessness and fatigue the next morning.
As the amount of alcohol people drink is directly proportional to the amount of sleep disruption, drinking in moderation is the key to getting a good night’s sleep.
