Disc replacement is considered a new trend in treating back pain particularly in the lumbar spine. While some people manage the pain through medications and even exercise, others are advised to undergo surgery. Traditionally, the procedure called spinal fusion solved the problem. However, it is a more complex solution as it entails the fusion of two or more vertebrae.
Satori World Medical also offers other procedures for the spine, including cervical discectomy w/ fusion, lumbar laminectomy, and lumbar laminectomy w/ fusion.

Disc replacement is performed by placing an artificial disc joint into the problematic area. One type of artificial disc that is FDA-approved in the U.S. is the Charite, which is especially made for the lumbar spine.
Common candidates for disc replacement are those with chronic low back pain resulting in a condition called degenerative disc disease. Some experts do not consider Degenerative disc disease (DDD) as a disease, but a term to describe the normal changes in the spinal discs, the soft discs that separate the bones of the spine. DDD is caused by aging, loss of fluid in the discs, and tiny tears or cracks in the outer layer of the discs.
